ColdFusion Jobs?

So I took some time off to get some work done. dColumbus and I cranked together some great work in record time. Having him do the forms in Flex in itself saved me days of work, and I must say the end product is something we’re both quite proud of.

But due to the downturn in the economy, several of my jobs have dried up, and thus the amenities I have grown accustomed to I can no longer afford. These being rent and food, primarily – and not to illicit sympathy, but this includes for my wife and two very young children.

Among other things I do contract work locally as a mobile tech, not unlike the Nerd Herd from NBC’s “Chuck”. However back in march, the workload dropped drastically from around 3-4 hours a day to now 1-2 hours a week.

I’m looking to continue my education in Coldfusion and general application development, but locally there is limited need and I find it mentally draining trying to compete with India on most of the freelancer sites available. So the question I pose to you, my colleagues, mentors, tutors, and readers: where do you find ColdFusion work?

Please, please, please comment.

I can totally feel you on this one.. I have also found a lot of my work dry up. I do a lot of work for a development agency but eggs all in one basket springs to mind here as the work they are passing me has really slowed down.

I have a couple of jobs to quote for them coming up but it starts to get scary when not invoicing anything for over a month..

I would also like to know what other options to consider. I’ve not looked at the freelance sites yet but I too can imagine the competition from India makes it pretty hard.

Not scientific…but…for what it’s worth, even though I’m not currently looking, I subscribe to:

    LinkedIn “ColdFusion Jobs”
    LinkedIn “Adobe ColdFusion Group”
    LinkedIn “Adobe ColdFusion Developers”
    LinkedIn “CFManiacs:ColdFusion Developers Group”
    LinkedIn “The IT Developer Network”
    Monster
    VirtualVocations
    numerous employer-specific lists
    CyberCoders
    Indeed
    etc

…and every time I receive an email from one of these sources with at least one CF opportunity, I drop it into a folder named, “Employers.” That folder has 50 messages since June 6 and 450 messages since the beginning of 2009 (75 messages/month). Most messages have multiple opportunities.

    Where have you been looking?

I find that at our User Group people are often looking for CF contractors or to hire (as well as Flex peeps). So I suggest networking. Get yourself out there to any and all events remotely related.

    Senior CF developer job:

Suggestions: Use a MVC framework like Model-Glue, use ColdSpring, checkout patterns like DAO, service layer, etc.

For practice I create sites for clubs and family members. However I do CF every day at work so I don’t need much CF code practice.

In Tweetdeck I have a search column for “ColdFusion” ( and others ) and I see pretty much every day at least a few job positions requiring ColdFusion.

I recently joined up with rentacoder.com and getafreelancer.com

There was lots of work to be found on craigslist but it was like emailing a brick wall – there was never a response. Over a hundred emails sent out and no replies. And I made sure not to include my e-smell so it can’t be that :)

A big barrier is the fact that I’m still relatively new to CF. I know how to do some pretty advanced stuff but I’ve never found a graph that shows what a junior/intermediate/senior CF developer should be capable of so it makes it hard to gauge myself.

Thanks for the responses though, guys. Fastest comment response ever. Keep ‘em comin.
